What Everybody Should Know...To Understand Teen Depression
Is Serious
* Depression is the world's number one psychological
disorder
What is most necessary to understand about depression is
that it is the world's number one psychological disorder.
It is only second to heart disease as the most disabling
condition in the world. And more alarming, it is growing
annually at an alarming rate. Also amongst the youth of
the land of promise, America - teenage depression is growing.
* Suicide is the third leading cause of death among
teenagers (with teen depression??)
It is most disturbing to notice that suicide is the third
leading cause of death amongst teenagers in the United
States. And what's more disturbing, is that there is a
close link between depression and suicide.
It is furthermore disturbing to become aware of the fact
that 90% of teenager suicide victims were suffering from
at least one diagnosable, active psychological disorder
at the time of death. Most often this disorder is
depression!
It is absolute necessary that we as parents and friends and
even youngsters themselves, should be able to notice the
warning signs of depression and of suicide! The importance
of this alarming statement is accentuated by the fact that
only 15% of suicide victims were receiving treatment at
the time of death.
Since depression in children and teens has only been
recognized as a serious disorder since the 1980's, the
parent and teen communities are not ready yet to recognize
it as a serious disorder as teen depression. Neither parent nor teen is
trained to identify it and this may lead to uncertainties
and frustration about teen depression.
